About Ubah Medical Academy

Ubah Medical Academy is a 9-12 charter school founded by educational leaders in the East African community, that ultimately seeks to prepare students for successful and productive lives as United States citizens while allowing them to retain their unique cultural heritage.

Ubah's Mission

Mission: The mission of Ubah Medical Academy is to provide students with a rigorous education that will prepare them for college and the pursuit of medical or other meaningful careers in our community. As a public charter high school, Ubah Medical Academy is open to all students, but our program is inclusively designed to meet the unique needs international students and their families have in a culturally sensitive environment.

About Ubah

Cost: There is no cost to attend Ubah Medical Academy. Because we are a charter school we are able to offer additional opportunities to our students.

Students: The majority of our approximately 240 students are East African immigrants.

Medical Focus: Many East African youth spent time in refugee camps where they experienced first-hand the dire consequences of living in a community that does not have access to medical resources.  We believe that a school that provides a curriculum enriched in medicine, health, and life science is essential, not only for members of the East African community but for all of the recent immigrant communities in the Twin Cities area.

School Building: Ubah Medical Academy is located at 1600 Main Street in Hopkins, MN (formerly the Katherine Curren Elementary School).  Ubah leased the facility from the Hopkins School District at the start of the 2007-2008 school year.

History of Ubah

History: Ubah Medical Academy opened their doors in the fall of the 2004-2005 school year with approximately 90 students.  In three years Ubah outgrew their facility and moved to the current location in Hopkins.  Ubah is part of a K-12 International Education System.  See Community Partners page for more information.

What does "Ubah" mean?: In Somali, “ubah” means flower and our students are growing into strong, productive, bi-cultural citizens.

Ubah's Logo: The logo includes a medical sign amidst a flower to signify our focus on health and sciences and the flower to represent our growth and development.
